Design Only Transformation

This large rear garden lacked definition and purpose. The client wanted a landscape that felt intentional, layered, and full of interest with distinct zones for relaxing, dining, growing, and enjoying nature. Our design delivered a garden that unfolds like a journey, with architectural features, changing materials, and hidden spaces that encourage exploration and create lasting impact.
The garden was a vast, undefined lawn that felt disconnected and uninspiring, with no clear purpose or zones for living. The new design created a dynamic, purposeful space. From sleek paved terraces and hidden seating nooks to a tranquil pergola dining area and a productive glasshouse zone, the garden now flows seamlessly with layers of character and interest.
Design Only
This design-only project was all about giving a large garden clarity and purpose. The original space was expansive but lacked structure, making it feel flat and underused.
We began closest to the house, laying limestone slimsetts softened with low-level planting to create a welcoming transition. A patterned porcelain terrace with bespoke cedar bench seating formed the first social zone, partially hidden by planting for a sense of retreat.
Further into the garden, black walk-through frames and slimsett paths guided the journey toward a custom-built pergola designed for shaded dining. Here, a tranquil water rill was introduced for movement and sound. On the opposite side, another pathway of slimsetts and frames connected to a more informal garden, balancing the space.
The lawn was lifted with raised corten planters, while a secluded occasional seating area for two provided a private escape. At the rear, functionality took centre stage with a Victorian-style glasshouse, productive vegetable beds, and a bespoke garden shed ensured the garden was as practical as it was beautiful.
Finished with painted black fencing and pleached boundary trees for privacy, the design created a garden with rhythm, interest, and purpose.
Discovery & Vision
We explored how the client wanted to live in the garden, focusing on creating distinct areas that would each serve a meaningful purpose.
Design Development
Concept drawings and 3D visuals were produced to demonstrate zoning, material transitions, and key architectural features, ensuring the large garden felt cohesive but dynamic.
Specialist Coordination
Material selections (limestone, porcelain, corten, cedar) and bespoke features like the pergola, shed, and glasshouse were carefully planned to align with the design intent.
Seamless Delivery
Although we provided the design only, our detailed plans and specifications ensured the client’s landscaping team could deliver a garden true to the vision.
