Family Garden - Concept & Master Planning
.avif)
A strategic garden masterplan for a young family in Nottingham, designed to support everyday family life while comfortably accommodating larger gatherings of friends and extended family. The brief focused on creating a clear sense of structure, usability, and long-term value, with defined zones, low-maintenance planting, and year-round interest.
Prior to design, the garden lacked a clear sense of purpose. While generous in size, the space was undefined, with no clear relationship between lifestyle needs, journey, or long-term usability. Decisions around layout, levels, and use had not yet been resolved. The completed design provides a cohesive masterplan that brings clarity and intention to the entire space. Each zone is carefully positioned to support how the family lives and entertains, while maintaining a strong visual connection across the garden. The result is a structured, flexible environment that balances practicality with atmosphere and longevity.
Family Garden
This project began with a desire to invest in the garden as an extension of family life, a space that could evolve with young children while remaining adaptable for hosting and entertaining. Rather than focusing on individual features, the emphasis was placed on creating a considered framework that would guide future decisions and ensure the garden remained functional, comfortable, and engaging throughout the year.
Understanding Use & Priorities
We began by understanding how the family wanted to use the garden both day to day and when hosting others. This stage focused on lifestyle, movement through the space, and how different activities needed to coexist without conflict.
Spatial Planning & Zoning
The garden was divided into distinct but connected zones. An outdoor kitchen beneath a louvered pergola, sun-oriented lounging, shaded dining, and a secure play area. Each zone was positioned to maximise usability, comfort, and flow.
Structure & Atmosphere
Structural elements and planting were developed to create definition, privacy, and visual interest. The planting strategy priortised low maintenance while delivering year-round structure, seasonal change, and impact.
Masterplan & Design Framework
The final stage delivered a comprehensive garden masterplan, providing clear guidance for future build decisions. This ensured the family could move forward with confidence, knowing the garden had been carefully planned as a cohesive, long-term investment.
